A cat wins Hambone Award after being folded in a sofa bed

Giles, the charming black cat, took home a trophy and some stitches after getting wedged between a cushion and the couch frame.

The 15th Annual Hambone Award, which celebrates the most bizarre pet accidents, was fiercely contested this year. Finalists included a Labrador who unexpectedly jumped off a 36-foot-high bridge, a parrot trapped in a door, and a dog caught chewing on a phone charger.

The Hambone Awards were created by Nationwide Insurance after a dog suffered mild hypothermia from getting stuck in a refrigerator and eating an entire ham. “When they opened the fridge, they found him with the bone,” said Heidi Sirota, Nationwide’s pet insurance president and chief pet officer. “This inspired us to create the Hambone Awards to spotlight the most ridiculous medical claims for pets we insure.”

As for Giles, his owners Kaitlyn and Reid have one golden rule in their New York apartment: “When putting the couch back together, make sure Giles isn’t underneath,” Reid explained in a video about the award. Reid had warned his parents when they arrived to visit, but things went awry when they tried to reassemble the couch before leaving for the airport.

While Kaitlyn and Reid were still asleep, Reid’s parents accidentally trapped Giles under the sofa bed. “Something happened, and we’re really sorry,” said Reid’s stepmom, revealing that Giles had been hit in the face by the sofa’s mechanism.

“We have to take him to the vet, like, immediately,” Reid recalled. Though not life-threatening, Giles needed stitches. “He had a ‘meow-ouch’,” Sirota said. “But he’s doing much better now.”

Although Giles recovered, he now has a new fear of anything with a hinge. “He’s developed a particular phobia of things that open and close,” Reid noted.

The family of the Hambone winner receives a trophy, a gift card, and the chance to donate to a pet charity. “These stories highlight the importance of having pet insurance,” said Sirota. “It can make all the difference.”
